Three Ladue students killed in a car crash early Wednesday in University City. What was the cause of the crash?

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but according to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the driver was speeding east on Groby Road in his mother’s car when the vehicle failed to make a curve, went through a yard, and crashed into a vacant home near Mulberry Lane.

All three boys, who were 15 years old, were pronounced dead on the scene, and the driver was the only one wearing a seatbelt.

Although the police officials only provided limited information, they have said that earlier in the day, the police tried to pull over a similar car but lost sight of it before the accident occurred.

The authorities asked the highway patrol to investigate to make sure no improprieties have taken place.

Community Mourns Loss of Three Students

The Ladue High School district is mourning the loss of three students who died in the fatal car crash on Wednesday.

Even though the students haven’t been identified yet, the district’s spokesperson confirmed that all three victims attended Ladue Horton Watkins High School.

The death of these young individuals has created an impact on many, not only in the high school community but also in the St. Louis County area.

The district superintendent, Jim Wipke, expressed his condolences by stating that “We take it minute by minute. We take it student by student to make sure they get the support they need.”

The high school has made counselors available for any student who may need some emotional support during this difficult time, and a candlelight vigil is planned before this weekend’s football game.

Parents and neighbors of the victims have expressed their grief and noted that these boys were good kids who made a bad decision.

Jenn Bugg, a parent of one of the victims’ friends, said, “It could have been any of our kids. Teenagers make teenage decisions. Unfortunately, they weren’t given the opportunity to learn.”

Local Authorities React

St. Louis Alderman Sharon Tyus, who owns the vacant house that the car crashed into, expressed her sadness about the incident by saying, “I’m just really shocked. Three babies lost their lives. My heart is breaking.”

Some neighbors mention crashes occurring in the past due to a confusing stop sign near the area; however, speeding has never been a prevalent issue.

Esther Carter, who has lived in the area for years, said that crashes are common on the road’s bend near the empty home but typically only result in hitting a light pole or tree rather than a home.

Investigations Ongoing

Investigations will continue to find the cause of the crash, and the police urge anyone with information to come forward and help in their investigation.

Although it’s too early to provide answers, investigators are examining if the lack of driving experience of the young driver or the car’s condition may have contributed to the tragic accident.

With shock and grief throughout the community after losing young lives in such a devastating way, it may take some time for Ladue High School and its community to heal.

However, together everyone will come out of this even stronger.
